O’Donnell argues that Royal Events help nations reconstruct the national past through creative-selective montage. In stressing the bricolage-style reassembly of a particular version of the national past, these events act as a unifying mechanism, emphasising a discourse of seamless continuity in the face of ‘apparent’ social fragmentation. Taking O’Donnell’s analysis into the realm of other sporting and cultural mega-events, provide examples to illustrate the similarities and differences evident.

Experiencing Mega Events

It is now possible to suggest that the accepted narrative of a mega-event is inseparable from the commentary of the audiences that consume them physically and virtually. The Germany06 World Cup is a case in point. The organisers made strenuous efforts to ensure that the visiting fans experienced a ‘new’ Germany, in terms of the welcome they received as they travelled around the country to follow their teams. The much heralded ‘fan fest’ were the most obvious manifestation of the festivals of fun which were created to support the ‘main event’ (i.e. the football tournament’) but this World Cup also spawned an exponential increase in the number of spaces for interactive communication between people from across the globe – primarily achieved through the information superhighway. Check out http://worldcupblog.spaces.live.com/PersonalSpace.aspx to view the sorts of fan sites which grew out of this mega event and which increasingly competed with the mainstream broadcasters to secure the attention of the viewing public. Add in the bloggers (including video blogs) and you have an amazing array of media outlets from which to choose. As Google has recognised, increasingly the participant is the creative content producer of the early 21st century.
